Why Your Franchisees Are Filling in the Blanks (And What That's Costing You)

I've sat in enough franchise brand rooms to know how the communication conversation usually goes. The franchisor says they're communicating. The franchisees say they're not hearing anything. And somewhere in the middle, a vacuum forms — and that vacuum gets filled.

Not with optimism. Not with trust. With speculation.

Doug Flaig, CEO of Stratus Building Solutions (now Stratus Clean), said something in our conversation that hits close to home: "Nature abhors a vacuum. And when there's no communication, no conversation, the vacuum gets filled with speculation — and often misspeculation."

He's right. And if you've ever watched a brand change, a system update, or a new initiative roll out across a franchise network and land somewhere between "resistance" and "total silence," you've seen this play out in real time.

Here's what Doug does differently. At Stratus Clean, franchisees are grouped into tiers — because a franchisee doing $25K a month has completely different challenges than one doing $500K a month. Every month, those tier groups meet. The brand communicates where it's going. Legacy operators come in and mentor newer ones. And critically — the why gets answered before the what ever comes up.

That last part is where most brands fall short. We announce the change. We push out the memo. We maybe hold a call. But we skip the why. And if franchisees don't understand why, they're not going to trust the what — no matter how good the what actually is.

Change management in franchising isn't a communications problem. It's a comprehension problem. Your franchisees aren't failing to receive your messages. They're receiving them and not believing them, because the context hasn't been built.

And here's where it gets harder. Franchisees consume information on their own terms.

They're operators. They're in the field. They're not sitting at a desk refreshing their inbox. The format and frequency of your communication has to meet them where they are — not where it's convenient for corporate to send.

This is exactly why I built what I built at My Podcast Host.

The Internal Franchise Podcast is a private, done-for-you podcast channel for your franchise network. Your franchisees can listen on the way to their first account of the day. They can hear you answer the why in your own voice — not through a PDF, not through a policy update, not through a system they never log into. It's the communication channel that actually gets consumed. Because it's audio. And audio travels with them.

The Franchise Podcast Network is the public-facing side. It's where brand voices like Doug's get amplified — where your leadership's perspective on growth, change management, and franchisee culture reaches the audiences that matter.

Doug is preparing to rename and rebrand an entire company. He's navigating a three-tier franchisee model through a transition that touches everything from operations to identity. He told me the hardest part isn't making the decision. It's making sure every layer of the network understands why the decision was made.

You've probably felt that weight.

The question isn't whether you're communicating. It's whether your communication is actually landing. And if you're relying on email blasts and quarterly calls to carry your culture forward across hundreds of franchisees — I'd push back on that. Hard.

The franchisee adoption gap is real. I've lived it from inside enough brands to know it doesn't fix itself. But it does respond to the right channel, delivered consistently, in a format your franchisees will actually finish.
