The Gap Between the Recipe and the Cake

The recipe is right. The cake keeps coming out different.
Josh Lyon, COO at ScentHound, said it better than I've heard it said in a long time. ScentHound spent 15 years perfecting the model before they ever franchised it. Their founders, Tim and Jessica, had a genuine recipe. And still — same franchisees, same tools, same support system — the results were dramatically different depending on whether a franchisee could lead an entry-level employee. Not whether they had capital. Not whether they were in a good market. Whether they could lead the person standing at the front desk.
That's the franchisee adoption gap. It's not about having the wrong tools. It's about getting a franchisee to actually use what you've built — consistently, across 157 locations, on the way to 600. And it compounds. Because the complexity you add doesn't simplify their job. It adds to the gulp rate, as Josh calls it. And if the water spills? Adoption dies.
When I talk to franchise ops leaders about communication — really dig into how they're getting information, coaching, training, and culture to their franchisee network — the answer is usually some combination of email, a portal nobody logs into, and a conference once a year. And then they wonder why adoption lags. Why the message doesn't stick. Why the great tool they built to solve a real problem is sitting unused at 40% of their locations.
Franchisees consume information the way the rest of us do: in their car, during a workout, while walking the dog. Not in front of a screen. Not in a training portal. The brands that are winning this communication challenge are the ones who have stopped fighting that reality and started working with it.
That's what our Internal Franchise Podcast does. It's a done-for-you private podcast channel — your voice, your brand, your content — delivered in the format franchisees actually consume. Best practices. Tool adoption. Leadership coaching. Culture. The kind of communication that actually closes the gap between the recipe and the cake.
And for brands who want to extend that reach further — to future franchisees, to consumers, to the industry — our Franchise Podcast Network gives franchise brands a public-facing voice in a space that's growing fast. We bring franchise brand voices to the audiences that matter.
Josh put it plainly: the brands that win are the ones fighting for simplicity. They're investing ahead of the growth curve instead of always chasing it. A private podcast channel is one of the simplest, highest-adoption communication tools a franchisor can deploy. No new portal. No new login. Just a show your franchisees actually listen to.
If you're heading toward 300, 500, 600 units and you're still relying on email blasts and annual conventions to close the adoption gap — it's time to change the channel.
